Feel bad for me? No! Feel bad for you if you haven't heard this mixtape yet!!!
1. Arliss Nancy - The Crease
Buy: Simple Machines (2012)
Submitted By: Captainsdead
Comments: great rock record, nothing more, nothing less.
2. The Producers - I Love Lucy
The Producers/You Make The Heat (2000, CD Reissue of the band’s first two albums)
Submitted By: BoogieStudio22
Comments: I make no apologies for my love of all things ‘power pop.’ The Producers put out a couple of albums in the early 80s and seemed to fly under the radar of most people, which is too bad because these guys crafted some great songs.
3. Neil Young and Crazy Horse - Travel On
Americana (2012)
Submitted By: @mikeorren
Comments: This song IS summer in America. Drive fast on a long highway and put it on repeat.
4. Amy Cook - I Wanna Be Your Marianne
Buy: Let the Light In (2010)
Submitted By: Hoosier Buddy
Comments: The most summer-soaked tune from an album produced by Alejandro Escovedo. A tasty confection: swirl cupcake in which relaxed rhythm guitar mixes with strangled cat lead tones, topped with Amy’s buttercream vocal track. You can never eat just one.
5. The Woolly Bushmen - Gotta Go Out West
The Woolly Bushmen (2012)
Submitted By: Autopsy IV (ninebullets.net)
Comments: Retro rock and roll from a group of kids from Orlando. I caught them live at Tropical Heatwave this year and they were a complete and total blast. Album came out last week and is available on Bandcamp.
6. The Wind-Up Birds - There Won't Always Be an England
The Land (2012)
Submitted By: April @ Now This Sound Is Brave
Comments: This song cemented my love for this fantastic band out of Leeds, England. Even though it's specifically about rabid nationalism in the UK, it's an almost effortless exercise to translate it to the jingoistic patriotism that has been promoted in the U.S. over the past decade. The feeling of mounting frustration and anger in this song is a thing of beauty.
7. The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Wasting Away
Buy: Strung Out in Heaven (1998)
Submitted By: Ryan (Verbow @ altcountrytab.ca)
Comments: Can anyone take the essential elements of 60's music (garage, pop, psychedelia, country rock) and blend them as seamlessly as Antone Newcombe? I think not. Great, mellow track from these freaky weirdos. Love the harmonica.
8. Counting Crows - You Ain't Going Nowhere
Underwater Sunshine (Or What We Did On Our Summer Vacation) (2012)
Submitted By: @philnorman
Comments: Get your mind off winter time. You ain't going nowhere.
9. Alvin Youngblood Hart - Joe Friday
Big Mama's Door (1996)
Submitted By: Adam Sheets
10. Hurray For The Riff Raff - Little Black Star
Look Out Mama (2012)
Submitted By: TheOtherBrit
Comments: Saw these gals & guy out of Louisiana in Waverly a couple months ago and they blew me away.
11. The Doc Marshalls - Here They Come
Look Out Compadres (2012)
Submitted By: toomuchcountry
Comments: I've been playing this track repeatedly after first hearing it during one of Bill Frater's Freight Train Boogie podcasts (a great source of new Americana music). In this month we celebrate our independence and are reminded of the costs paid to defend it, many of the lyrics from this song resonated with me.
12. We Run - Like
We Run EP (2012)
Submitted By: @popa2unes
13. Little Wings - Fall Skull
Black Grass (2011)
Submitted By: Lord Summerisle
Comments: I didn't hear this album until early 2012 but it has swiftly become my favourite album of 2011. Brilliant stuff, a touch of Will Oldham, a dash of Bill Callahan and some sweet electronics burbling in the background. Perfect.
14. Lyle Lovett - Give Back My Heart
Pontiac (1988)
Submitted By: Rockstar Aimz
Comments: In spring, 1993, I was in college in Chicago at a coffee shop listening to these two other students jam away on their acoustic guitars, really killing it. They were playing some song that I didn’t know, but it stuck in my head all of these years because it was so good. Thanks to the miracle of satellite radio, I finally figure out nearly two decades later on my commute to work that they were covering this Lyle Lovett song, only adding a few curse words and massive blues guitar riffs.
15. The District Attorneys - Worry About Your Health
Slowburner (2012)
Submitted by: Corey Flegel (This Is American Music)
Comments: this was the song that reminded me to send in a submission...so, it then became my submission.
16. Willie Nile - Hard Times In America
Live From the Streets of New York (2008)
Submitted By: Truersound
Comments: Now that the 4th is over, back to reality.
17. Alex Turner - Piledriver Waltz
Submarine EP (2011)
Submitted By: Simon
Comments: I treated myself to a few pieces of vinyl on Record Store Day amongst them a Caitlin Rose 7” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJWiUOIpUS8) featuring a pair of tracks from Arctic Monkeys album Suck It and See and have been ‘spinning’ both regularly over the last month, Piledriver Waltz has got stuck in my head and become a new favourite, I stumbled across another version of the track that appeared on Alex Turner’s film soundtrack for Submarine and thought I’d throw this into this months mix. http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/reviews/v6cg
18. Zodiac Mindwarp & the Love Reaction - Prime Mover
Tattooed Beat Messiah (1988)
Submitted By: Gorrck
19. Muddy Waters - Unk In Funk
Unk In Funk (1974)
Submitted By: Bowood
Comments: Muddy Waters just letting us know that funk wasn't born until he entered the world, presumably 7am on Sunday July 7th, with seven doctors in attendance. Today is July 7, the mojo is still strong.
20. Bruce Springsteen - Racing in the Street
Darkness on the Edge of Town (1978)
Submitted By: tincanman2010
Comments: The bit about the girl sitting on her Daddy's porch, all her pretty dreams torn is one of the saddest moments in song I know. Bruce's band doesn't get enough credit for the way they play this. And it's not a car song; it just sounds at first like one.
21. Japandroids - Continuous Thunder
Celebration Rock (2012)
Submitted By: Trailer
22. The Specials - Too Hot
Buy: The Specials (1979, reissued 2002)
Submitted By: annieTUFF
Comments: It's full blown summer now, and the crazy heat always makes me think of summers as a teenager, and punk. Driving around in my first car (death trap of a car that I scrimped and saved to buy after working my first fast food job) no AC, windows down, sweating like crazy, and cranking music as loud as I could thru my little battery powered tape player that I brought with me (because the stereo in the car kept blowing out the fuses for the lights...see? death trap). So, in honor of all the record breaking heat and summer tunes and memories I'm picking The Specials. And yeah, I know, it's not punk, it's ska, but c'mon it's toooooo hot.

This Week in Boston
It's a killer week for live music in Boston. Check this out:
Monday - July 16
Elizabeth Cook with Tim Carroll at Club Passim in Cambridge. I wrote about Cook a few days ago. I'm really looking forward to this show. Tickets are $15 at the door.
Tuesday - July 17
I went to your school and I did my detention, but the walls were so gray I couldn't pay attention.
That's right, one of my top five live bands is in town Tuesday night. The Hold Steady at the Royale! Tickets are $20. And it's going to be hotter than balls tomorrow in Boston (seriously, record high temps expected), so it may be double whiskey, Coke, double ice for me.
Wednesday - July 18
1. My homeboy Kasey Anderson is in Boston!!! He's bringing his band The Honkies to Cafe 939. The Wandas and The Rationales also perform - both of these highly rated bands are local to Boston and both have free stuff on their websites.
2. Not a gig, but movies!!! The Brattle theater is having a double feature of Color Me Impressed: a Film About the Replacements (6:45 screening) and What Did You Expect? Archers of Loaf Live at Cat's Cradle. The double feature is $15, or each show is $10. The Replacements doc will be follow by a Q & A with director Gorman Bechard. Actually, Bechard directed both films.
Thursday - July 19
Well, Aerosmith is in town, at the Gahden, but I would rather watch the Weather Channel.
Friday - July 20
Refused with OFF! at the House of Blues. I have never seen Refused, but I saw OFF! open for Dinosaur Jr. last year and they were killer! Refused is a Swedish hardcore punk band who originally broke up in 1998. I believe that this Boston stop is part of their reunion tour. OFF! is a hardcore punk super group from Los Angeles featuring former members of the Circle Jerks, Black Flag, Burning Brides, Redd Kross, Rocket from the Crypt, and Hot Snakes. Now that's a lot of punk.
OFF! - Fuck People
Buy: OFF! (2012)
Saturday - July 21
Sleep off the hangover. It's been a long week. Or get your prog rock on with Yes at Bank of America Pavilion.
Sunday- July 22
This show is all kinds of sold out, but if you can find a ticket make sure to hit the Gaslight Anthem with Dave Hause opening at the Middle East. I saw the Gaslight Anthem about two years ago, and they totally lived up to the hype. A GREAT live act. Their new album Handwritten is out next week. If you are reading this post on Monday, they are live streaming their show tonight at 10:15pm! Dave Hause is the opener for Gaslight, and I have seen him twice in the last year. He's kind of a punk rock folk singer. So, so good.
Dave Hause - Pray for Tuscon
Buy: Resolutions (2011)
Did I miss anyone?

Frank Turner vs. Nicki Minaj fans
Today I witnessed the second funniest thing I have ever seen on twitter (the first being Neko Case pondering why women musicians aren't propositioned at their shows). There was a big music festival in Scotland this weekend called T in the Park, and both Frank Turner and Nicki Minaj were to perform on the same day (random, polar opposite acts, I know. Who's the booking agent for this festival?). Apparently Minaj and her people were incredibly rude to the T in the Park staff and stage crew.
In addition to her being mean to the staff and stage crew, Minaj showed up up 55 minutes late for her set, and apparently gave a very lackluster performance followed by a lot of booing from the audience.
Of course, Minaj's fans then attacked Turner via twitter...
I'm with Frank on this one. I wouldn't know Nicki Minaj's music if she walked into my apartment and put it on my turntable.
Here are some haterz that Frank retweeted...
Awesome.
Of course, the question I must now know is whether Nicki Minaj gets propositioned after her sets, even if she is mean to the stage crew.
I had to go out and run some errands in the middle of the Minaj fans vs. Turner twitter war, and the below song was on the radio (WFNX, 101.7 in Boston) when I started my car. Sadly, FNX is being turned into conservative talk radio featuring the likes of Glen Beck and that neo-facsist a-hole Rush Limbaugh. I would rather have a station of 24/7 Nicki Minaj.
I Still Believe
Buy: England Keep My Bones (2011)
I don't know anything about Minaj, but Frankie T. puts on one of the best live shows that you will see. I saw him and his band on my birthday at the Middle East in Cambridge, MA, last fall, and it was so killer. He's back in Boston on Sept 6 and 7 at the Royale.
MONDAY UPDATE: Frank wrote a blog post about this incident on his web site. Good stuff Frank!

Nine Bullets Radio
My buddy Bryan (aka Autopsy IV) not only runs one of the best music blogs on the web (NineBullets.net), but he also does a weekly radio show on WMNF 88.5, a public station in his hometown of Tampa, Florida. The show streams live at 10pm Eastern every Thursday night, and you can stream or download archives of the show. He asked his friends to help promote the show, so I am hoping that some of you northerners read this post and start tuning in. Yes, he does take requests!
Here is last week's playlist (June 28, 2012 [Artist - Song - Album]):
01. John Moreland & The Dust Bowl Souls – Low – Everything The Hard Way

Feel Bad For June
Behind schedule once again. See ya June! Happy summer holidays to you all, and enjoy some tunes from your favorite bloggers, twitters, music lovers, rogues and rapscallions. Check out more at http://feelbadforyou.atruersound.com/.
1. Adam Carroll -Blondie and Dagwood.mp3 removed by request
Buy: Lookin' Out the Screen Door (2000)
Submitted by: toomuchcountry
Comments: This one is for all you June brides and grooms who want your new marriages to last. My suggestion is to put down that copy of 50 Shades of Gray and listen closely to Carroll’s lyrics of romance based on the couple from a comic strip legend.
2. River City Extension - Clever & Quickness
Nautical Sabbatical (2009)
Submitted By: @popa2unes
Comments: Formed in Asbury Park, NJ, in 2007. The band played an explosive showcase at last year’s SXSW; Newport Folk Festival producer Jay Sweet stumbled upon the gig, and later told Billboard, "This band, River City Extension, is ripping the paint off the wall."
3. The Rolling Stones - No Spare Parts
Some Girls (2011 reissue)
Submitted By: Bowood
Comments: Jagger in hillbilly mode for this great road trip song from last years deluxe reissue
4. The Gaslight Anthem - "45"
Handwritten (2012)
Submitted By: Gorrck
Comments: Single released in advance of the album. Thinking about actually getting the 45 on vinyl.
5. O. Children - PT Cruiser
Apnea (2012)
Submitted By: tincanman2010
Comments: Sunshine. Music. Cruising. I said cruisING not cruisER. Oh well, rockin’ driving song so I’ll keep it.
6. Ryan Montbleau - Head Above Water
For Higher (2012)
Submitted By: Mando Lines
Comments: Ryan Montbleau’s new album was recorded in New Orleans with George Porter, Jr., Ivan Neville, Simon Lott and Anders Osborne. Ben Ellman (Galactic) produced. The majority of the songs (including this one) are Montbleau originals, but the record also has covers of Curtis Mayfield, Bill Withers and Muscle Shoals great Eddie Hinton. Great record.
7. The Lovely Bad Things - I Just Want You To Go Away
New Ghost/Old Waves (2012)
Submitted By: annieTUFF
Comments: I just heard of this band a couple of months ago, so I’m still trying them on for size. But sometimes the best love song is an anti-love song.
8. Cory Branan - Yesterday
Buy: Mutt (2012)
Submitted By: TheOtherBrit
Comments: Cory finally got this album out and this ode to John Cougar is the perfect way to kick off summer.
9. Red Red Meat - Chain Chain Chain
Bunny Gets Paid (1995)
Submitted By: Ryan (Verbow @ Altcountrytab.ca)
Comments: I’m constantly surprised at the numbers of bands I missed out on in the 90′s. Red Red Meat were straight outta Chicago, even touring with Smashing Pumpkins – yet I’m only just now finding out about them thanks to Tim Rutili’s current band (Califone). This is off of their recently reissued Sub Pop masterpiece Bunny Gets Paid – damn fine song if you ask me. Crank it.
10. Ray Wylie Hubbard - The Messenger
Crusades of the Restless Knights (1999)
Submitted By: Rockstar Aimz
Comments: Killer song by RWH. This version features Patty Griffin on background vocals.
11. TV Smith - Ready For The Axe To Drop
Useless – The Very Best of TV Smith (2001)
Submitted By: Simon
Comments: The only redeeming feature of this week's Jubilee celebrations for me has been the various media articles and TV programming on the BBC revisiting punk, not that it ever really went away – which brings me to this month's song choice from a guy who’s continued to record solo and in various collaborations after the punk band he fronted split in 1979, prompted by one of the aforementioned BBC Rock-docs, here's a track from the The Adverts front man TV Smith http://www.tvsmith.com/
12. Austin Lucas w/Glossary - Alone In Memphis
unreleased (2012)
Submitted By: Bryan Childs (ninebullets.net)
Comments: This, I assume, will be on Austin’s next album.
13. Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires - Everything You Took
There is a Bomb in Gilead (2012)
Submitted By: @philnorman
14. The Mavericks - Come Unto Me
Suited Up and Ready EP (2012)
Submitted By: Trailer
Comments: Bad ass song. Glad they’re back!
15. Pearl Woods - Sippin’ Sorrow
From: Eeny Meeny Moe! (song orig. 1961, out of print)
Submitted By: BoogieStudio22
Comments: An old R&B tune, from a ripped LP that I recently acquired (quality’s not great). Just plain fun!
16. Jake Klar - Bring Flowers To My Grave
Jake Klar (2012)
Submitted By: Slowcoustic
Comments: Some great twangy singer songwriter "alt-country" from this new-to-me artist. The 7 track album is even a free download on his bandcamp page: http://jakeklar.bandcamp.com/ Highly Recommended.
17. Michael Dean Damron - Creakin’ Ol’ Bones
Nah Death, Im’a Comin’ For You (2012)
Submitted By: Romeo Sid Vicious
Comments: Mike D. has been getting me through a lot as of late and this track is the one I queue up the most at the moment.
18. Shooter Jennings & Last False Hope - Title: 1922
Outlaw Radio Compilation Vol. 2 (2012)
Submitted By: Adam Sheets
Comments: Based on a Stephen King novella.
19. The Riverboat Gamblers - Loser Neck
The Wold You Feed (2012)
Submitted By: erschen
20. Magnolia Mountain - Set On Fire
Buy (only $5): Town & Country (2012)
Submitted By: Corey Flegel (This Is American Music)
21. Micah P Hinson - Sweetness
…And The Pioneer Saboteurs (2010)
Submitted by: Lord Summerisle
Comments: I am baffled as to why this man is not huge. Probably my favourite artist of the last 10 years in terms of consistency. Every album is great.
22. Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys - The Devil Ain’t Lazy
Buy (mp3) Western Cowboy Classics (song orig. 1948)
Submitted By: April @ Now This Sound Is Brave
Comments: I get a kick out of the fact that this song is essentially praising Satan’s work ethic. And, of course, since it’s Bob Wills, it swings. The mellow-voiced Tommy Duncan provides the vocals.
1. Adam Carroll -
Buy: Lookin' Out the Screen Door (2000)

15. Pearl Woods - Sippin’ Sorrow
From: Eeny Meeny Moe! (song orig. 1961, out of print)

Comments: Mike D. has been getting me through a lot as of late and this track is the one I queue up the most at the moment.

Happy Canada Day and new Corb Lund song
Happy Canada Day to our fine neighbors to the north! Some of my favorite musicians are from Canada, including my main man Corb Lund. Lund has a new album called Cabin Fever coming out on New West Records on August 14. Here's the video to the lead song "Gettin' Down on the Mountain," a rocking song about survivalism in a post-oil world.
You can download "Gettin' Down on the Mountain" for free via Lund's mailing list on his web site. There's a bunch of other fun things on his redesigned web site too, like video blogs about song writing and other written musings by Lund. In fact, he recently previewed another song from his upcoming album called "Priceless Antique Pistol Shoots Startled Owner."
If you need more Canada Day happiness, I wrote a blog post for Star Maker Machine on Canada Day and Stompin' Tom Connors. Enjoy!
Finally, this was just brought to my attention. God bless Canada.
